Compose an 8-measure melody in C major that moves only by 2nds and 3rds. The first C and the last C are given for you. Check the rules below carefully. They come from centuries of melody writing, and they keep a line smooth and singable, give it a clear shape, and make it sound like a logical tune rather than a random string of notes.

Rhythm

• Use only quarter notes and half notes.
• Every measure needs at least one quarter note.
• No rests. Fill every beat.

Melody rules

1. Only 2nds and 3rds. Nothing larger.
2. No repeated notes. Every note moves to a new pitch.
3. Change direction. No more than 3 moves in a row up or down.
4. No two 3rds in a row in the same direction. Always follow a 3rd with either a step, or with a 3rd going the other way.
5. One high point. Your highest note appears only once, somewhere in measures 4–6.
6. Use both kinds of 3rds. Include at least one major 3rd (M3) and one minor 3rd (m3).
7. Step into the ending. End measure 7 on D or B, so the melody moves by a 2nd into the final C.
