Overview
In this module, we begin exploring intervals, which describe the relationship between two notes.
We will start by learning interval size (how far apart two notes are by letter name), and then add interval quality (the exact distance in half steps). You’ll work with two important interval families: major/minor intervals and perfect intervals
Objectives
By the end of this module you should be able to:
- Identify interval size (unison through octave) by counting letter names.
- Properly categorize intervals into the perfect or major/minor family.
- Build and identify seconds, thirds, fourths, and fifths using correct size and quality.
Key Terms
- Interval Size
- The distance between two notes measured by counting letter names (e.g., C to E is a third).
- Interval Quality
- The specific distance between two notes measured in half steps.
- Perfect Family
- Unison, fourth, fifth, and octave; these can be perfect, augmented, or diminished.
- Major/Minor Family
- Seconds, thirds, sixths, and sevenths; these can be major, minor, augmented, or diminished.
