tutor showing how one might approach the items in a module

Overview

In this module, we will explore a new scale (key): minor. You’ll learn the whole/half step pattern that builds a minor scale, and discover how it connects to the major scales you already know. We’ll also explore how major and minor are linked, how they share key signatures, and how the Circle of Fifths helps us organize both.

Objectives

By the end of this module you should be able to:

  • Construct a minor scale with whole and half steps
  • Identify minor key signatures
  • Determine the relative minor for any major key (and vice versa)

Key Terms

Relative minor
A minor scale that shares the same notes and key signature as a major scale, beginning on the sixth note (scale degree) of that major scale.
Enharmonic
Two notes that sound the same but are written with different names (for example, F-sharp and G-flat).
