Overview
In this module, we will cover how to write major scales in musical notation and learn how key signatures help to indicate key. We will also introduce the circle of fifths, a tool that shows how keys are related and helps you quickly identify the notes in any major scale/key. Together, these concepts will help you read, write, create music more fluently.
Objectives
By the end of this module you should be able to:
- Add accidentals to create a requested major scale
- Identify major key signatures
- Indicate where on the circle of fifths various major keys are located
Key Terms
- Accidental
- A group of symbols that change a note’s pitch.
- Key
- A group of notes (usually shown with a scale) used as the basis of a piece of music.
- Key Signature
- A set of sharps or flats placed at the beginning of the staff that shows the key/scale.
- Order of Sharps
- The specific sequence in which sharps are added to key signatures (F, C, G, D, A, E, B).
- Order of Flats
- The specific sequence in which flats are added to key signatures (B, E, A, D, G, C, F).
- Circle of Fifths
- A diagram that shows the relationship between keys and the order of sharps and flats.
